About the Author

Roger G. Linington, PhD, is a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Chemical Biology and High-Throughput Screening in the Department of Chemistry at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. He earned his PhD from the University of British Columbia. His postdoctoral research was a joint appointment between the University of California San Diego and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, which gave him the opportunity to participate in an international neglected disease drug discovery program in Panama City, Panama. He was also a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California Santa Cruz for eight years.

Philip G. Williams, PhD, caught the spectroscopy bug as a summer research student at the University of Calgary while working on a series of alkaloids from African plants. He earned his PhD at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He did his postdoctoral work at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego on microbial natural products before returning to the University of Hawaii at Manoa as a faculty member. His research interests are natural products and their applications in the fields of cancer and neurological diseases.

John B. MacMillan, PhD, is a faculty member at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He earned his PhD at the University of California Davis, where his interests in small molecule NMR began by studying the natural products chemistry of marine organisms. He did his postdoctoral work at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego with microbial natural products. His research focuses on the chemical and biological characterization of natural products with therapeutic potential in the areas of oncology and infectious disease.

I purchased the international edition for $30 vs. $150+ (the professor stated that this is the same book as the US version, just a different cover).Some of the cases seemed outdated as some of the articles were over 10 years old. This book contained good, basic information regarding laws and ethics. Most of the articles were interesting to read and did keep my attention. I would have liked more follow up. For instance, did someone get arrested? Is the person undergoing trial? (Things of that nature).

This poorly edited book is just another example of the frustration that can be caused by McGraw Hill products. Keywords highlighted in the text with no definitions and topics discussed in the chapter not listed in the index. I am extremely happy I don't have to rent or purchase another McGraw Hill product for the rest of my life.

OK, ths book sucked and so did the course, but that is somewhat irrelevant, as I had to take it for my degree. I am more disappointed with Apex Media. They sent a book that looked like it was chewed on by a dog--literally. I was beyond disappointed.

Love the way this book is set up and written. I like that it uses very recent examples for the case studies and really facilitates my learning.

I only purchased this because I read that it was compatible. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with US Edition. I now have to waste money on another textbook. BUYER BE AWARE

About the Author
Caroline Self has studied Asian brush painting for over thirty years. She holds a B. A. in bacteriology and public health, a teaching credential in art from UC Berkeley and a master's degree in art education and sculpture from San Diego State University. She taught art in the San Diego City Schools for twenty-five years and taught Asian brush painting to children for six years at the San Diego Museum of Art. She has studied traditional brush painting with teachers in Southern California, Japan, China, and Taiwan. She also paints and exhibits her colorful watercolor and acrylic paintings.

Susan Self studied art in college and on trips to Europe and Asia. She has a Ph.D. in comparative literature from UC San Diego, where she taught in writing programs.

Thomas H. Davenport is the President’s Distinguished Chair at Babson College and a research fellow at the MIT Center for Digital Business. He is also a senior advisor to Deloitte Analytics and the cofounder and research director of the International Institute for Analytics. Davenport is the coauthor of Competing on Analytics and Analytics at Work. This is the seventeenth book he has authored, coauthored, or edited.Jinho Kim is a professor of business and statistics at the Korea National Defense University and the research director of the KNDU Lab for Analytics Research. He holds a PhD from the Wharton School and is the author of six books published in Korea, including the bestselling 100 Common Senses in Statistics and Freak Statistics. He has developed and run an educational program for building individuals’ analytical skills. I loved the style of the authors regarding the basic concepts BUT the examples and stories they tried to relate to... oh my, they were not good. I've had some experience with numbers in my work and this book was for my MBA program. Therefore, I'm not a novice but the book made a point about relating stories to numbers and how effective it is (I agree, of course) but the stories this book tried to tie in were off the mark most of the time. That being said, there are so many good parts of the book to help you develop your quant brain.

I had a little trouble understanding who the authors had in mind as the audience for this book. It seemed to basic for any professional who would have to deal with statistics/data or would have to manage/collaborate with someone who does.There are some helpful reminders throughout about how to approach problems and how to communicate your ideas. But the authors seem seem to replace depth with a multiplicity of business-y anecdotes (ironic, as they include the old chestnut "the plural of anecdote is not data" - the plural of anecdote, it so happens, is not "a book").Overall, the book feels superficial. It might inform you how to probe an analyst on first-level questions, but doesn't provide enough depth to take you through a couple follow-ups or know when you're getting snowed.

As a management professor I keep reading all sorts of books. This book is a nice introduction to Quants for people who are afraid of numbers and data. It is written in simple language and analytic concepts are explained well for non-data people. A good introductory book if you are looking to acquaint yourself with the analytics world!

This book is a must read for anyone not in the data science business but who needs to understand how to use data better and learn what questions to ask and pitfalls to avoid in collecting and using data.It's a very valuable investment of time to read. I promise it will stay on my Kindle forever, and I'll recommend it to anyone who has decision making responsibility.

This is a fine introduction to the world of data analysis for business professionals. The authors do a fine job of providing a generalized framework for analytic approaches to business problems. It also provides a number of helpful anecdotes which are presented in terms of the framework to help the reader understand them as real-world exercises. Other than that, it is a very standard business publication - high on concept, low on practical impacts. If you are already familiar with basic analytic techniques or are a designer or user of BI/dashboards/etc., then this book is not for you. If you are completely new to these things, it will be helpful.

Must read for non-quant managers and analysts involved in business analytics. Author clearly did a good job of explaining problem framing to decision making in easy language. It is also a good read for quant people to understand on how to communicate extracted information to co-worker and managers.

If you aren't a quant but you realize the power and importance of data driven business, this book is for you. A very solid, accessible overview that will get you started. Ina Garten and French cuisine. An interesting combination! I have a couple other of her cookbooks and have enjoyed a number of the menus that she has published. So, I was intrigued when I saw this volume.There are some recipes in here that differ from ones that I have tried over time. And that is always attractive to look at. Can I improve my recipes by looking at those of someone else? Examples:Chicken with 40 cloves of garlic. I first tried this at a dinner party 35 years ago. I really enjoyed it. I tried it a handful of times over the years and enjoyed the family recipe that I used. This is a nice variation. Intriguing variations from what I was used to? Cognac and heavy cream.Or Boeuf Bourguignon, a fancy name for a beef stew. This is fairly similar to my version. Distinctions? Cognac, beef broth. One difference. After having dined on this dish at a local restaurant, I enjoyed their reduction of the liquid, making the whole dish much richer. Hence, now, I reduce the liquid. This version does not. Still, there are some elements here that I need to incorporate into my own recipe next time around.And Croque monsieur. One of my favorite French lunches. Nice and makeable recipe. And a tasty outcome! Filet of beef au poivre. I have just begun to make similar dishes, and this recipe is a nice one! Again, cognac adds a nice element to the sauce.Garten says at the outset (Page 15): "I hope you'll find lots of entertaining ideas here and recipes that will not only wow your family and friends, but also convince you how easy it is to cook really delicious French food. . . ."

It looks like I've owned this book now for 11 years, it sure doesn't seem like I've had it for that long. It comes off my shelf for special occasions more than any other cookbook in my collection. In fact, we just used it again for three courses for our big Christmas dinner for friends. I can't say enough good things about this book so I'll try to point out some highlights. The Goat Cheese Tart has been a huge hit at three Christmas parties over the years. The Indonesian Gingered Chicken just made it's umpteenth appearance but this time as an Amuse Bouche to rave reviews and requests for the recipe at our Christmas table this year. The Chocolate Buttercream Cake was our dessert choice and everyone loved it. The roasted Tomato Soup was our soup course this year and people asked for some to take home. Over the years her salads have made repeated visits, especially her French Potato Salad. We've made several of the soup and appetizer courses and have tried the majority of her dinner ideas. The desserts are always welcome as well. I think that other reviewers have pointed out that this may be the best in her collections and I agree. We own a couple more of her books but this is the one that I always check first when I'm looking for something really good for ourselves or for our guests.

I love to cook, it is one of my greatest pleasures. I love food, learning new recipes, serving people dinner - from fancy get togethers, to a casual meal - and the one constant I always go back to are Ina Garten's cookbooks. The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, themed to give readers top recipes from her now-closed gourmet store in The Hamptons, is absolutely no exception.First, the photographs in the book are amazing. They show beautiful meals of completed recipes, as well as some concerning choosing the freshest ingredients, preparing a recipe, and setting the table. Instead of making one feel intimidated or lacking because you don't have a 1,000 square foot kitchen of your own, they are inspiring, and make you excited to try each new recipe. Second, the food is, simply, divine. While there are some very creative and new recipes, many of the recipes are classics with a few new twists, that truly elevate the food. My favorite recipe in the book - as you can tell from my photograph how dirty the page is from me cooking it over and over - is the recipe for Filet of Beef Bourguignon. Ina took a Julia Child classic recipe and cut out a few hours of cooking time by using filets of beef. Truly delicious and so much easier to prepare. Serve it for your next dinner party, and you will get nothing but raves.

I have several of Ina's other books, but I seem to make and re-make things out of this cookbook more than the others combined. There's a great spinach pie recipe in here as well as a vegetable torte that I make regularly because I like a solid vegetable entre I can eat on all week with a salad. I make the spinach pie with a spaghetti squash crust rather than using pastry, thereby getting another vegetable serving and avoiding gluten.

I've had this cookbook for years -- almost since it was first published. I love it. I have used so many of the recipes and go back to them over time. The recipes are good, easy to prepare and very thoroughly tested for the average cook. Several friends are as hooked on BC as I am. We use her cookbooks for everyday and as a source of ideas for holidays, family dinners, parties -- everything.

This book is more than a cooking book,it is a pleasure to read and get to know Ina better. The pictures are stunning, the recipes easy to read, understand and follow, in short it is probably the best cooking book I ever read. Every recipe seems easy. I already tried the Provençal potato salad and it was simple and so delicious and fresh. I can't wait to try the rest. I have made lots of Ina's recipes which I got from the Food Network, and all are super great recipes, so I know her recipes are fool proof and delicious. I will be buying many more of her books. Love her, this woman can cook! Oh, and there are tips that are super helpful on almost every recipe.

All of Ina's cookbooks are terrific. This one is a culinary thrill for me having vacationed in Paris.My friends wonder where I get the know how to put on party after party every time with such sucess and skill.I keep Ina as my little secret !

I received the books on time and they are wonderful to read for my classes.

This book has many flaws, but the most serious is that it downplays the role of the United States in Latin America's history--the darker history. For example, Goodwin begins the chapter on Brazil by praising its fourth dictator as someone all about “democracy." Other dubious statements concern the orchestrators of the coup and their motivations, the nature of Brazil's landless peasants, and the debatable successes of the now debunked "economic miracle" and disastrous post-dictatorship privatizations. Glaring omissions include torture and murder by the military regime, state terror as the cause of the guerilla movement, the plight of marginalized peoples under the regime, the impunity given to the regime's torturers and murderers, and the role of the United States in Brazil’s struggles with underdevelopment and the destruction of the Amazon. Most devastatingly, the author omits the substantial role of the U.S. in the 1964 coup and dictatorship. This book appears to have been written by someone wishing to obscure, rather than reveal, the truth of Latin American history. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend it. A better strategy would be to teach with actual primary sources that include wide perspectives on these tragedies, including the perspective of the many victims.
