Imagine Katniss (The Hunger Games) venturing into the Game of Thrones, with less complexity, no dragons, and a YA slant. This is Princess Aurelia story. It starts in her city square. She’s in disguise watching the hanging of women accused of being witches. The princess has magic in her blood and sees spirits. In a few months she is scheduled to travel to the magically walled city of Achleva to marry the prince she’s never met, until an assassination attempt which hastens her exit from her city.I enjoyed following princess Aurelia’s journey and the unfolding of the backstory of the world, it’s magic, people, and civilization. She’s compassionate, courageous, smart, and action oriented. It was a bit predictable, at the end I laughed even Aurelia said to herself, if I searched my heart, I would have known that. There’s a lot of death that at times felt too casual. I found a few plot holes and some cool connections that are visible if you pay close attention. Pay attention as you read, to all references to bloodleaf. There’s some complex relationships and history, a glossary would have been nice.

I regarded the heroine, Aurelia, like a long-time friend: I mostly liked her, sometimes I got really annoyed with her, but in the end I cheered for her success. She's feisty and strong-willed, not a pushover, and also (thankfully) not stupid. She did make some dumb mistakes in the novel and suffered from some insecurities, but didn't let them define her character. It's a breath of fresh air.Warning, however: almost everyone dies. Some characters die and come back to life, but very few. In some cases, it felt like the deaths happened too quickly - we didn't get a chance to further explore the characters before - whomp whomp - they were suddenly dead because it's convenient to the plot. Nevermind the mass killings of the nameless soldiers/townspeople! If the character had a name, even for only one page, I was interested in getting to know more about them (Emilie, Lisette, the soldier who died on the Achlev wall, the horrible man in the gibbet who was supposed to deliver the letter from Aurelia, her mother, etc omg). Only Kate's death felt right. The Empyrean horse was just unfair!I'm juuuust not feeling the Aurelia/Zan connection. First, Kellan disappears for over two hundred pages and conveniently leaves room for Zan to move in as a love interest, then he comes back with an overly-simple explanation and suddenly plays a very minor part despite being one of the lives Aurelia has a blood-connection to. And suddenly Aurelia is head-over-heels for Zan?? It felt like it came out of nowhere. Maybe it was the lack of flowery language whenever there were Zan-descriptions, but I saw them becoming friends and BAM suddenly lovers... uh... what!?I wouldn't exactly say the novel has a happy ending, but I guess it depends on your interpretation. I'm just mad Emilie never miraculously came back since we didn't first-hand witness her death. Oh well.In the end, it was a really good, exciting read. It was almost nonstop action-action-action and it was hard to put the book down.

This felt like a very light, bland fantasy which I had a hard time getting into. Admittedly, I loved the beginning. It was interesting, gripping, made me want to keep going. Aurelia, princess of Renalt, the kingdom that hates magic, had sympathies for being betrothed to the sickly prince of Achleva, the kingdom that can party with magic. Now that I've summarized it like that, you're thinking, Oh two opposing kingdoms blah blah?Yes. This is two kingdoms which should be fundamentally different but aren't. It's reminiscent of Girls Made of Snow and Glass which had a similar issue with the world building. The kingdoms are no different and must be like, the size of Luxembourg because they're ridiculously easy to travel between. It felt like the author gave no real thought to them. And then there were the characters, none of whom I ultimately cared about. While Aurelia turned out not to be a total idiot, and I appreciated that, I just found her very plain. She was missing a spark of interest to grab the reader. Many of the side characters I feel I didn't have a chance to connect with. They weren't well fleshed out and could have been interesting.Overall this wasn't really my kind of book, but I could see where for some people, this is a new and interesting premise that they haven't read a thousand times. If that sounds like you, then try it!

There are some scholars who believe that the burning of witches was to stop a political/economic movement in which women played a key role.. The evidence against witches was association with common rights of land use for pasture, passage, and estates. This then was my frame of witches. In Bloodleaf, the witches are of royalty; the opposite of the reality in the past[in my readings]. Of course, this is a fantasy novel not based upon history, but on the imagination of the author. And the author does a stunning job of creating characters, magical setting, and political intrigues. Yet, about half way through I found the pages slowing considerably. The characters were becoming too righteous, or too evil. The magic become more of a convenient literary tool to get where the author wanted to go; rather than a believable part of the developing storyline. In fact, I became sickened by the royalty & aristocratic dialogue/I won't forget your sacrifice; or, He died in service to the princess, which means in died in service of the queen. I'am not one that cares much for royalty, whether real or celebrity. In other words, I novel became one I couldn't identify with.

The country of Tavamara is renowned for its famous Market, its decadent wines, the harsh climate in which it manages to flourish. It is also well known for the harems kept by the royal family. King Shahjahan's harem is especially infamous, for his concubines are comprised of an unusual, many say dangerous, assortment... This volume also contains three additional stories. The Jewel of Tavamara Fahima has always been the lesser sister: younger, plainer, too smart and independent. Then her sister commits the ultimate taboo, putting their lives in danger. In order to save her family, Fahima must take her place, though she is painfully aware Shahjahan will never see her as more than a paltry substitute... Knight to Rook Displaced by war, Rook makes a home in the Desert where his cousin Cordelia has become Princess. A famous, highly-regarded strategist back home, in the Desert he is regarded as useless and held in contempt for his inability to fight. Adrift and alone, he can only watch and wait for a chance to prove he belongs amongst the Sons of the Sands. Everything You Need Though he left the Desert years ago and is set to become the next Advisor to the King of Tavamara, Ikram spends most of his days feeling out of place, living a life of civility and calm that is nothing like the Desert he left behind. Eager to get away from the palace for a time, he braves the famous Market...
